Meditation Tips (page 4)
Meditation has been proven to be beneficial physically, mentally, and spiritually. Here are some tips to assist you in improving your meditation practice.
  1. Find a piece of music that stirs your soul and during your meditation listen to it. Put your entire self into the music as it plays and notice every detail. Beethoven's music is great for opening up your solar plexus chakra. New Age artist Enya's music stirs the heart chakra. While listening to your choice of music notice how your body is reacting. What chakra energy center is being stimulated?
  1. After relaxing your body and mind spend the rest of your meditation session focused on one individual chakra center. Just set your attention there and watch what happens. This can be a great healing meditation. You may find that there are issues buried at these centers you had forgotten about. If any come up simply release them to the universe and set your attention back at the chakra center. To release issues visualize them leaving your body and moving out into space while they dissipate into thin air.
  1. Watching your breath is a great stress reliever. Using the simple mantra "so hum" helps keep your focus on your breath. Saying in your mind the word "so" as you inhale and "hum" as you exhale. This keeps your mind busy on a task so it doesn't wander off while you're watching your breath. The result is a calmer you. This mantra is also great for stress-induced insomnia.
  1. When you meditate notice the pattern of thoughts that come up. The ones that keep repeating themselves over time are the areas of your life that you need to simplify and clean up to reduce the stress in your life.
  1. Try taking your meditation outside and practice mindful walking. This can be done by focusing your entire attention on walking as you do it. Notice everything about your walk - starting with what it feels like to take each step as you take it. Once you have your entire attention focused in the here and now on your movements, you can expand your awareness to include what your environment looks, smells, and feels like as you walk through it.
  1. You can practice mindfulness meditation anytime anywhere by simply becoming completely aware of the space that you are in. Notice everything around you and within you at a given moment. Then try to maintain this awareness. It's not as easy as it sounds. When you notice that your thoughts have taken you away, simply come back to your present awareness.
  1. If you have trouble staying awake or focused during meditation, try putting some Rosemary essential oil in a diffuser during your meditation. This oil helps to enhance mental clarity.
  1. Hand gestures or mudras are helpful for obtaining specific states of mind. The OM mudra helps you to attain more peacefulness and less aggressiveness. It is done by holding the tips of the thumb and forefinger together forming an "O". This can be done while meditating or at anytime during your day.
  1. Exercising or doing Yoga postures before meditating helps you to quiet your mind more quickly.
